UNICEF Tanzania
Accelerating Mpox outbreak preparedness with community insights
May 2025
The Colectiv Analysis
Pilot Aim
To gather insights into community understanding and preparedness for Mpox
Background
UNICEF prepared for the Mpox threat in Tanzania with AI-enabled rapid analysis
Sample
Data from 26 interviews across Tanzania were analysed using KiSwahili transcripts
Qualitative Findings
Public Awareness of Mpox
Health workers see Mpox as a significant threat, but don’t believe the public are concerned
"watu wanachukulia kawaida"
(people take it lightly)
Current activities to prepare for Mpox: Raising public awareness
Health workers are taking a broad approach to public education, reaching the public through trusted leaders with support from the local media
'vituo vya redio, makanisa, misikiti yangetumika tufikisha elimu kuhusu huu ugonjwa'
(Radio stations, churches, mosques are used to convey education about this disease)
Barriers to community preparedness for Mpox: Low recognition of Mpox
Health workers reported that people don't recognise Mpox and don't see it as a threat
'wanaita upele, hawajui jina la Mpox'
(they call it a rash, they don't know the name Mpox)
Barriers to social and behavioural change
It is not economically possible or socially acceptable for people to avoid crowded places and stop touching people in the absence of an immediate health threat
'ugumu unakuja kwenye mazoea na tamaduni zetu,... tumezoea mkisalimiana, mnapeana mikono, tumezoea kukumbatiana'
(The difficulty comes from our habits and cultures,... we are used to greeting with handshakes, embracing.)
Emergency response preparedness for Mpox
Teams are in place to isolate cases and reduce transmission, but about half of health workers feel preparation is insufficient
"maandalizi bado hayajatosha"
(preparations are still not enough)
Staff suggestions for improving the public health response
Health workers wanted more health education for both the public and the health workforce, supported by better funding and collaborative or coordinated action
'Kinachohitajika zaidi ni elimu kwa jamii'
(What is needed more is education for the community.)
Conclusions and Recommendations
Conclusions
Health officials are preparing for Mpox, but face challenges due to limited resources and a public that doesn’t recognise Mpox as different to other diseases with a rash
Colectiv Recommendations
Public health messaging should be focused on key behaviours, for example: contact 199 for advice if you have an unusual rash with fever.
